About Our Name

Grandmother Grace was an inspiration in my life. She gave me so many gifts. She cherished me and I cherish her.

SunShineme as a web-site name came because of Grandmother Grace. As a child her voice would greet me as I swung through her door, breathing deeply of the aroma rich sweetness of fresh home-made bread, cinnamon crust pies, chicken and dumplings or some other luscious delight wafting through the air.

I would hear her voice lilting from the back – “Is that you, Sunshine?” No matter what was going on, something about hearing her call out for Sunshine brought a happy feeling inside me. I’d holler back, “It’s me, Grandma”. I appreciate when people sunshine me – when they shine a light of love and goodness my direction. When they see the best in me and grow it. I pray my work inspires all of us to do that for one another whenever possible.

In a town of 900 or so people when we were headed out the door and I was concerned about how I “looked” or something equally important, she would say – “it’s all right you’ll never see them again”. There, you saw everyone again. Still, with a chuckle she gave me a taste of freedom to dare to be just as I am.

She also offered the age old adage of “if you can’t say something nice about someone, don’t say anything.” My answer to that was – “if I don’t say anything, they’ll think I agree”. Her answer – “You don’t care what they think, just be quiet.”

One not heard from anyone else was a reminder that “when you wake up in the morning, you never know what a day will bring”.
